AT requires you to use their gateway for their fiber service. You can disable the router portion (pass through mode) and connect a much better router to it. There is also a way to use your own modem but AT will still charge you the monthly fee regardless of what you do once you signup for the service.

The Nighthawk AC1900 is a Router only. It is compatible with AT DSL but we did want to make that distinction because for it to work, you would need to disable your wifi but leave the B90 connected as a modem.
Can I replace my AT Gateway?
You’ll need your sign-in info. Keep your AT Access ID and password or your account number and 4-digit passcode handy. Your replacement gateway doesn’t include a battery backup. If you need a new one, you can purchase it from a third-party manufacturer or retailer.
