What is Thordon material?
Thordon elastomeric bearing material is made from thermosetting resins which are three dimensional, cross- linked condensation polymers. Thordon is a very hard, tough synthetic polymer alloy that has performance characteristics superior to those of most other bearing materials, both metallic and non-metallic.

How does a Thordon Compac stern tube bearing work?
These bearings are lubricated by lube oil and to prevent leakage of oil out at sea or ingress of water inside the tube, lip seals are attached at forward and aft part of the tube. The Thordon bearing system uses sea water for lubrication of the propeller shaft and bearing.
How do stern tube seals work?
A housing with series of seal rings clamped into position on the bush. Sterntube seals have to perform two separate functions, one is to ensure that water does not enter the engine room, the second one to allow the propeller shaft to rotate as smoothly and freely as possible.

How much play should a cutlass bearing have?
If you get a feeler gauge, and can slide a 5 mil feeler gauge or thicker shim between the bearing and the shaft, your at the end of the bearing and it should be replaced. 4 mil or less is best. But, as others have said though, ideally no play is desired.
