What is the difference between compression test and cylinder leakdown test?

By Matthew Alvarez

What is the difference between compression test and cylinder leakdown test?

A compression test is a dynamic test (engine moving), a cylinder leakdown test is a static test (engine at rest). So, the compression test measures how much pressure the engine can produce while cranking. In contrast, to the cylinder leak down test, which measures how much pressure is lost in the engine.

What is a running (dynamic) compression test?

A running (dynamic) compression test confirms; how efficiently each cylinder is pulling air in; retaining it for the correct amount of time; then releasing it into the exhaust. So, if a cylinder cannot perform these functions properly; the result can be a loss of volumetric efficiency or a misfire.

What is fuel pressure testing and why is it important?

Consequently, checking fuel pressure is an essential part of fuel injection system troubleshooting. Before doing any fuel pressure testing, it is a good idea to understand how fuel system components work: So, the fuel pump pumps fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel pressure regulator.

What does a cylinder power balance test measure?

A cylinder power balance test measures the power that a particular cylinder; contributes to the total power of the engine. A running (dynamic) compression test uses a compression gauge, to check individual cylinder breathing. So, basically you are checking how well your engine is inhaling and exhaling.

How do you test for a leak in a cylinder?

Cylinder Leakage Test. A cylinder leak test is usually performed after a cylinder pressure test has indicated a problem. The cylinder is placed on top dead center of the desired cylinder and the spark plug is removed on that cylinder only.

What does a leak-down test tell you?

A leak-down test can tell you if the loss of compression is due to things like worn rings, burned or stuck open valves(intake or exhaust) or a leaking head gasket. The beauty of the leak down test is, you cantest only low cylinders, or you can test all the cylinders to determine overall engine condition.

Does cam timing affect cylinder leak down test results?

Furthermore, the readings are not affected by, cam timing, or even engine cranking speed. Another great feature of the cylinder leak down test is the fact that; you can hear where the air is leaking out of the cylinder. When a cylinder has high percentage of leakage, first check the oil filler cap.
