What is seachem Purigen used for?

Purigen controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity.

Can you use too much seachem Purigen?

Purigen® will never become toxic through overuse, but there are several situations under which it is beneficial to allow some organic waste to build up in the aquarium.

Is seachem Purigen reusable?

Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigen® is ready for reuse. Do not reuse if odor of bleach/chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

Does Purigen lower nitrates?

Purigen does not directly remove nitrate to any big extent. It removes organic matter before it can break down into nitrate, however.

Does Purigen lower pH?

Purigen® does not release any buffering agents or acids into the water, nor is it capable of impacting the mineral concentration in any way, so it will not directly impact the pH, KH, or GH of the aquarium.

Can you use Purigen and carbon together?

They can definately be used together, and also using carbon should make your Purigen last a lot longer. I use both. They do different things for the most part. If you had to choose, I would use a very good grade carbon first, and purigen second.

How many times can you recharge Purigen?

Being able to clean (regenerate, or recharge) this media and put it back into use is a major positive that I discussed in my Seachem Purigen Review. Their literature states that it can be regenerated up to 10 times.

How long does it take Purigen to work?

I put the bag of Purigen from my 5 gallon tank into my 10 gallon tank and bam! It seemed like within only 10 or 15 minutes the fish started getting livelier.

How long does Purigen take to work?

Does Purigen remove beneficial bacteria?

Using Purigen® will not, however, “starve out” beneficial bacteria colonies. When a tank is new, the bacteria colonies need as much organic waste as possible to cycle the tank quickly, so this reduction in total waste works against you.

How long does Purigen take to remove nitrates?

After leaving it in the mixed solution for 24 hours, you then have to thoroughly rinse the bleach off the Purigen media. You then have to dip Purigen in a dechlorinator (like Seachem’s Prime or Safe) for another 6 hours. You need for 4 tablespoons of Prime or 16 grams of Safe for every cup of water.

Is Seachem purigen a mixture or compound?

Seachem Purigen is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water

What is the product description of purigen?

Product description. Purigen’ s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity. Purigen darkens progressively as it exhausts, and is easily renewed by treating with bleach. Purigen is designed for both marine and freshwater use.

How do I recharge my purigen?

To recharge your Purigen simply leave it in the bag and place it in a small container with 50% bleach and 50% water. It can take up to 12 hours. Rinse really well and let it soak in water with a couple of table spoons of chlorine remover. This can take up to 8 hours, but has always been less for me.
