The proper way to wear a closed lei is on the shoulders where it is draped half in front and half down the back. Leis made with leaves from a ti (pronounced tee) plant are considered to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. DO NOT refuse a lei when offered one. This is considered to be disrespectful.

How do you make an artificial lei?
Start with your first flower threading it over the needle and pushing it all the way to the end. Add a bead then a flower, then a straw then a flower and so on keep going until about 2 inches of thread is left. Finish up with a straw. Now knot the two ends together and close the lei.
When should you not wear a lei?
Last, but not least, there is one more taboo…it is considered (in Hawaii) impolite to give a closed (tied) lei to a pregnant woman. Many Hawaiians feel that a closed lei around the neck is bad luck for the unborn child. (Head Hakus and open-ended leis are acceptable to give to pregnant woman.)
