What is ESHU known for?
Eshu, also known as Elegba or Legba, is a trickster god of the Yoruba people of Nigeria in West Africa. He is unpredictable, sly, and fond of pranks that can be cruel and disruptive. Eshu, who knows all the languages spoken on earth, serves as a messenger between the gods and people.
What can ESHU do?
Within the Yoruba, Eshu was considered a messenger between the gods and humans, delivering prayers and sacrifices to the heavens. He was a neutral force to human life, seeking to add balance.
Are ESHU and elegua the same?
In the Americas, Eleguá is syncretized with Saint Anthony of Padua, the Holy Child of Atocha, or the Archangel Michael. Eleguá is paired with Eshu, the trickster. Some of the sacred stories consider them to be the same, some consider them to be brothers.

The Yoruba god Eshu is a so-called ‘trickster god’. He may do good as well as evil. Hence, he needs to be appeased, by means of sacrifices, honour, and visits to his temples. The present figure of the god ‘Eshu’ is carved of hard wood in typical Yoruba style and painted completely black.

A divine mediator of fate and information, a linguist, a crafty metaphysician, Eshu is a trickster not just because he fools people and creates chaos, but more profoundly because he escapes the codes he simultaneously reinforces.
Is Papa Legba an elegua?
Papa Legba is thought to have emerged from the Yoruba and Dahomeyan diaspora as a continuation of the Orisha Eshu. This emerged as Lwa Papa Legba in Haitian voodoo, spirit Papa Laba in New Orleans Hoodoo and as the Oricha Elegua in Santeria.

What are ESHU’s colors?
He is often identified by the number three, and the colors red & black or white & black, and his caminos or paths (compare: Avatar) are often represented carrying a cane or shepherd’s crook, as well as smoking a pipe.
What does Eshu look like?
Eshu is often depicted with two faces, one at the front of his head and one which appears at the end of an arch that projects from the back of his head. One face looks ahead at the spirit world and one looks behind at the earthly world.
Who did Eshu trick?
One myth depicts Eshu as tricking Ifa out of the secrets of divination; another, in which Eshu restores Ifa from his imprisonment in a palm tree, casts him as the founder of the Ifa religion.
