What is a PleurX?
A PleurX drainage catheter is a thin, flexible tube that’s placed in your chest to drain fluid from your pleural space. This can make it easier for you to breathe.
How long can you live with a PleurX catheter?
Mean survival was 3 months (range 5 days to 37+months) for all patients, with best median survivals of 5.5-6 months in breast and ovarian cancer. Catheter was removed or replaced in 15% (8 of 51 patients) due to infection, air leak, or blockage. One patient requested decortication for excessive fluid secretion.
Is PleurX catheter permanent?
Implantation of a permanent PleurX catheter is a safe procedure with a high success rate and only few AEs. The procedure has the potential to serve as an effective procedure for palliation of recurrent MPE in terminal cancer patients.
Can ascites be drained at home?
The PleurX drain is a tunnelled indwelling peritoneal catheter that can be managed at home to remove small (500 ml) aliquots of ascites on a regular basis or when it becomes symptomatic.
Is a Pleurx catheter painful?
It occurs in 36% of patients but is usually mild and resolves within 3 days after insertion (27). This pain can be usually easily managed with analgesics. Negative pressure that develops during drainage of the IPC may result in pain.

How is a Pleurx catheter removed?
Firm traction is applied on the catheter and the cuff is freed by blunt dissection using the kilner needle holder (Instrapac Standard Suture Pack) inserted into the tunnel via the catheter entry site. The catheter is then with withdrawn with gentle traction and the wound is closed with a single suture.
Why do they put talc in lungs?
Talc is sprayed through a tube into the chest area around the lungs. It is given to people who have breathing problems caused by a buildup of fluid or air in this area. Talc is used after the fluid has been drained out, to prevent the problem from returning.
How long does a chest tube stay in?
For a chest tube insertion, the doctor will insert a hollowed tube between your ribs. This allows air to drain and the lung to reinflate. The tube may remain in place for 2 to 5 days or longer.
