What is a duck dive?

By Penelope Carter

What is a duck dive?

The duck dive is the technique used by surfers to sink their surfboards underwater so they can dive under waves with their surfboard. It takes years of practice to develop a great duck dive technique, so don’t get discouraged.

What is the difference between a dabbler and a dive diving duck?

Diving ducks, also called sea ducks, are typically birds of large, deep lakes and rivers, coastal bays and inlets. Their speculums lack the brilliance of those on most dabblers. Most patter along the water in taking wing. They all dive for food, whereas dabblers rarely dive. They also have a more rapid wingbeat than most dabblers.

Can you duck dive with a surfboard?

Surfboards with a lot of volume are very difficult to push underwater, sometimes they are impossible to duck dive with because they float too much. The duck dive is usually done with shortboards, hybrid boards or small “fish” type surfboards. It’s usually better to turtle roll when trying to pass the break with a bigger surfboard.

Can you shoot a duck while diving?

Or, they might land well short of the main body. Neither situation is ideal for consistently shooting divers. Diving ducks typically aren’t as wary as their puddler buddies. In fact, if the wind is right, you can often take them while hiding along shorelines or hunting from fairly crude blinds.
