What does your digit ratio say about you?

By Sarah Oconnor

What does your digit ratio say about you?

Your digit ratio reflects the extent of your exposure to male sex hormones (eg testosterone) while still a foetus. These hormones have masculinising effects.

What does high 2D:4D ratio mean?

While a lower 2D:4D indicates a higher level of prenatal testosterone exposure, a higher ratio reflects a lower exposure to testosterone (ie, higher estrogen exposure) [10,14–16]. These effects are sexually dimorphic, as females tend to have a higher 2D:4D ratio than males [17].

What is your digit ratio?

Digit ratio is the ratio of length of different digits or fingers typically measured from the mid-point of bottom crease where the fingers join the hands to the tip of the fingers. However, most commonly, digit ratios indicate only 2D (index finger):4D (ring finger) ratios [1].

Does finger length mean anything?

Men with shorter index fingers are more likely to pick fights. Women with the same hand shape are more likely to react with aggression after being provoked. Men who experience a higher surge of prenatal testosterone, and thus have longer ring fingers, tend to be risk takers.

Which finger is longer on a woman?

index finger
For many women, the index finger is nearly the same length as the ring finger, while in men the ring finger tends to be longer than the index finger. On average, a woman’s index finger is about 97-98 percent the length of her ring finger, while a man’s index finger is about 96-97 percent the length of his ring finger.

Does a longer ring finger mean more testosterone?

Many of us have studied our hands and noticed whether our index or ring finger is longer. Research suggests that having a longer ring finger compared to index finger reflects greater exposure to male hormones during an individual’s time in their mother’s womb.

What is high digit ratio?

A greater digit ratio occurs for men with Klinefelter’s syndrome, who have reduced testosterone secretion throughout life compared to control males, than in their fathers or control males. Digit ratio in men may correlate with genetic variation in the androgen receptor gene.

Is finger length related to testosterone?

Finger length ratio (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait. Men have relatively shorter second digits (index fingers) than fourth digits (ring fingers). Smaller, more masculine, digit ratios are thought to be associated with either higher prenatal testosterone levels or greater sensitivity to androgens, or both.

Why are long fingers attractive?

The ratio between the length of his right index and ring fingers is linked to facial attractiveness, a new study finds. The more testosterone, the higher this 2D:4D ratio is, and also, the higher-quality sperm the male produces.
