Is 240V Wye or Delta?
240V power is used in the US and parts of the world. In the US 120 / 240V 1 Phase 3 Wire is the standard for homes and 240V 3 Phase Open Delta is the standard for small buildings with large loads. In parts of the world 240V Single Phase 2 Wire is the standard for homes.
Are motors connected in wye or delta?
In this configuration of starting an induction motor, the motor is started in the Wye configuration (ref fig 1.) Once the motor has reached approximately 80% speed the motor is then connected in a delta configuration. Fig 1. This is considered an electrical / mechanical reduced voltage starter.
What is the difference between Wye and Delta motors?
The delta and wye motors provide the exact same performance in theory. The delta has a lower resistance, a lower torque constant and a higher current. The wye-wound has higher resistance and higher inductance, better for drives with lower switching frequencies.
Is 240V single-phase?
Because we only measure across two wires, both 120V and 240V are referred to as single-phase power. (It’s rare to find three-phase AC power in residential situations). Neutral and ground are related but serve different roles. The neutral wire is the current return path for 120V circuits.
Should a motor be wired in Star or Delta?
400v delta/690v star motors should always be connected in delta to a 400v supply as connecting in star gives 1/3 of the rated output power (as above), so if only 1/3 of the power is needed then a smaller, cheaper motor should be used.

Mainly LT motors are used where high starting torque is required. The high starting torque can be developed using only the delta connection because in delta connection the voltage across each winding is root three times higher than star connection.
