Are podencos good dogs?
Podencos are a group of Sighthounds with a very long history. Today Podencos are generally found in Mediterranean locales, especially in Spain, and are commonly used for hunting rabbits. They are also sometimes referred to as Warren Hounds. The name Podenco means ‘Hound’ in Spanish.
Do podencos make good family pets?
They are very affectionate and bond closely with their family. While the Podenco Canario is very gentle in play with children, they don’t respond well to rough play, often protesting with a quick nip or bite. Therefore, it is important to teach your children how to treat a dog with respect and how to play nicely.
Are podencos affectionate?
They are keen to learn, eager to please, loveably clownish, affectionate, and are good with children – as well as other household pets. They are energetic and active, but equally love a good long snooze throughout the day.

They are very much like Greyhounds, Lurchers or Whippets in terms of temperament and they are generally hardy and rugged. Unlike the greyhound, they hunt not only by sight, but by listening and tracking; jumping high in the air to spot their quarry is a typical Podenco trait.

They are are extremely intelligent and lively dogs who require plenty of exercise and stimulation. Most Podencos out in the country side if they see rabbits are off like a shot so you must be prepared to put lots of time and training with them for recall.

While they can be stubborn, they are highly intelligent and eager to please their owners. With the right type of training and persistence, your Podenco will be rolling over and giving paw in no time.
Are podencos easy to train?
I can’t emphasise enough what fabulous hounds podencos are; marvellous companion dogs and, if you get a young one, easy to train and marvellous agility dogs (they are very popular in agility competitions in Germany especially).
How big do Podencos get?
The Podenco Canario is a medium-sized dog, standing 21 to 25 inches tall and weighing anywhere from 44 to 55 pounds at maturity.
