Podencos are a group of Sighthounds with a very long history. Today Podencos are generally found in Mediterranean locales, especially in Spain, and are commonly used for hunting rabbits. They are also sometimes referred to as Warren Hounds. The name Podenco means ‘Hound’ in Spanish.
Do podencos make good family pets?
They are very affectionate and bond closely with their family. While the Podenco Canario is very gentle in play with children, they don’t respond well to rough play, often protesting with a quick nip or bite. Therefore, it is important to teach your children how to treat a dog with respect and how to play nicely.

I can’t emphasise enough what fabulous hounds podencos are; marvellous companion dogs and, if you get a young one, easy to train and marvellous agility dogs (they are very popular in agility competitions in Germany especially).

The Podenco Canario is a medium-sized dog, standing 21 to 25 inches tall and weighing anywhere from 44 to 55 pounds at maturity.
